Prof. Octávio L. Franco Visits Oliveira Lab

We were thrilled to host Prof. Octávio L. Franco during his recent visit to the Oliveira Lab at JSNN! During his visit, Prof. Franco engaged in insightful discussions on synthetic microbial communities and microfluidic systems. He also delivered an engaging seminar titled, “Antimicrobial Peptide Digital Optimization Enables the Generation of Bioinspired Products.” In his presentation, he explored the innovative application of genetic algorithms, artificial intelligence, and bioinformatics to design antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) inspired by nature. These cutting-edge approaches aim to tackle the challenges posed by antibiotic-resistant bacteria, paving the way for novel compounds to improve human and animal health.

Prof. Franco is currently based at the Universidade Católica de Brasília and is a Distinguished Professor from Brazil. With a Ph.D. in Biological Sciences from the University of Brasília and postdoctoral experience at Embrapa and the University of Edinburgh. He has led impactful projects across Australia, Israel, Portugal, Cuba, Holland, and Sweden. Over his extensive career, he has published nearly 500 research articles and supervised over 200 students, contributing to biotechnology and microbial control advancements.

The Oliveira Lab had the privilege of engaging in meaningful discussions and gaining invaluable insights from Prof. Octávio L. Franco. We would like to thank him for his time and for inspiring collaborative ideas that strengthen our research initiatives.
