The Oliveira lab is delighted to send off Ellena Hou, a high school scholar who spent the summer with our team learning and contributing to designing and constructing microfluidic chips for producing programmable biofilms. Supported by the prestigious Draelos Program, which aims to expose undergraduates to STEM fields in the Research Triad Area, Ellena quickly became an integral part of our research efforts.
Throughout the summer, Ellena mastered design tools, 3D printing, and microscopy techniques, eventually working independently on complex projects. Her dedication and growth were evident as she volunteered in the lab even after the program ended. Now, Ellena is preparing to apply to undergraduate programs at some of the best schools in the U.S., and we are proud to have played a role in her journey toward a bright future in STEM.
